TCUF DONATES TO DISASTER RELIEF FOR HAITI EARTHQUAKE

In response to the devastation and destruction in Haiti, the Texas Credit Union Foundation’s (TCUF) grants committee has approved a $5,000 grant to CUAid. The National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) in conjunction with the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) has activated the online disaster relief system to raise money for credit union employees, volunteers and members affected by the powerful 7.0 earthquake that has devastated much of the capital city, Port-au-Prince. 

“It is unfathomable to imagine the majority of any nation facing as widespread a level of destruction as we have seen with only a dwindling fraction of their hospitals and relief efforts sustained, but that is the reality the world is facing,” says Angela McCathran, Chairman of the TCUF Board and president and CEO of People’s Trust FCU in Houston.  “This is not an isolated event that will easily be resolved; rather, this is an international call for action that will take the dedication and support of every one of us.”

“We at the Foundation, along with the life-changing support of those supporters around the state, have helped millions get back on their feet after Hurricane’s Katrina and Ike and this most recent disaster will be no different,” Nickles continued.  “It will take more cooperation between all of our members and supporters and it will take a greater level of commitment than ever before, but with our unity and strength, we will all help provide the supplies, medical treatment and, most importantly, the hope these individuals need.”

In July of 2009, WOCCU initiated a three-year financial services program for Haiti with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development.  Relief efforts are underway and WOCCU staffers and officials have been accounted for after the devastation.  WOCCU has activated the Haiti Disaster Relief Fund and donations from around the world have been received.
